10 Ways to Fall In Love With Lisbon, Portugal



If there’s one city that embodies what it means to be a discoverer, it’s Lisbon. This city on the sea oozes charisma with an easy-going and vibrant charm. The right mix of distant Fado music, spectacular views at every corner and Mediterranean sun overhead, it doesn’t take long to fall in love with the city. 1. Check Out the Best Views

Lisbon is a city built on hills and therefore lots of great lookout points, or Miradouros. There are many scattered throughout the city but click here for a list of the best jaw-dropping views.

2. Catch the Sunset Listening to Live Music

Each night around sunset, locals and tourists gather at Miradouro de Santa Catarina as street musicians serenade the crowd. There is a kiosk bar selling inexpensive wine and beer.

3. Have Dinner at Chapitô à Mesa.

Part of a famous circus art school, Chapitô à Mesa has authentic Lisboan eats, an amazing view of the Tagus river and the bridge and amazing food and wine. Be sure to try to bacalao croquettes!!

4. Eat Pastel de Nata

The local specialty is sold at many bakeries across town. Fresh baked ones are delicious.

5. Visit Castelo de São Jorge

Unless you’re fond of waiting in lines, be sure to go early in the day or late in the afternoon. The views are spectacular and the castle is beautiful. The little town before the entrance of the castle is ever-so charming.

6. Listen to Fado

Fado is the traditional music of Lisbon. Traced back to the 19th century, you can listen to live Fado singers at bars around town.

7. Wander the Neighborhoods

Baixa, Chiado, Aflama, the list goes on! Each neighborhood is so unique and so fun. One of the best ways to get around is the trolley. We hopped on and off all day and just explored each part of town!

8. Stroll Through Avenida da Liberdade

The Champs-Elysees of Lisbon. This 300-foot wide avenue boast designer boutiques, fancy restaurants and the who’s who of Lisbon.

9. Day Trip to Sintra

Eighteen miles and a world away from Lisbon, Sintra is a fairytale. Get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and get lost in a land of castles and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this is perfect for a day trip.

10. Visit Belem

Lisbon’s most monumental and historical area is Belem. Many of the great Portuguese explorers embarked on their voyages of discovery from this port. Belem is a quick 15-minute tram ride from Lisbon.
