Page, Arizona is the perfect central hub, located in the center of the region dubbed the Grand Circle. Page, AZ is surrounded by many attractions, include the Grand Canyon, Zion Nation Park, Monument Valley, Capital Reef and much more. And I love going to disconnect, be surrounded by nature and take in the breathtaking panoramic views.
Carved out of rocky terrain, Page sits atop Manson Mesa and overlooks Lake Powell, the Glen Canyon Dam and surrounding canyons. In the early 1950’s, Page didn’t even exist, and neither did Lake Powell. So it was really the start of the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam project where the infancy of Page began. It’s crazy to know that the city was carved out of the desert only 40 years back. Ahead are the 5 things you must do if you visit Page Arizona and what to know before you go!
Antelope Canyon is separated into two canyons – Lower Antelope and Upper Antelope. And there are a few things worth noting before you visit. Antelope Canyon can only be accessed with a tour as it is located in Navajo land. And there are currently two companies that offer tours – Ken’s Tours and Dixie Ellis’ (both great options!). And Antelope Canyon is divided into two parts: Upper Antelope and Lower Antelope. Upper Antelope has more foot traffic, features warmer hues of reds and oranges and is an easy walk once you disembark your tour jeep. And Upper Antelope is also famous for the light beams that peak through at certain times of the day and the year. Lower Antelope requires descending stairs and ladders and is usually less crowded. You can also expect to see more blue and purple hues. But to be quite honest, you can’t go wrong with either one.
The multifaceted colors we see in pictures depend on how the sun is hitting the canyon so depending on what time of day you go you’ll see different tones. If you’re wanting to see the famous sun beams, those are best seen between 9:30am – 11am between March and October.
If you’re looking to avoid the crowds but still want to see the canyon (and get a workout), an Antelope Canyon Paddle Boards at Lake Powell Paddle Boards is the answer. It is such a neat way to see the entire water portion of the canyon – highly recommended!
Probably one of the most breathtaking views you will ever set eyes on, Horseshoe Bend is horseshoe-shaped meander in the Colorado River located about 3 miles south of Page. Granted, you will need to conquer your fear of heights but boy will you ever be happy you did. There is a free parking lot and a fairly easy hike to get there. And if you’re looking for the best time to get great photographs, right around sunset is your best bet. It is a little more packed at this time but in my experience, not overcrowded. And you can get great photos of the bend from many different angles!
Glen Canyon Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam on Colorado River. It is currently the single largest source of water in the southwestern US. This 710 foot high dam has not been short of controversy and has been called one of the most environmentally destructive projects of our nation’s history. And its destruction has been a hot topic. But without it, there would be no Page, Arizona. In fact, completion of the dam in 1964 allowed water and electricity to be harnessed. Since it could potentially be destroyed in 2036, it’s worth visiting before its gone.
The second largest man-made lake in the United States, Lake Powell is an oasis for hiking, boating, fishing, or just relaxing among the breathtaking canyonlands (more than 96 major canyons!). The lake resides both in Utah and in Arizona and stretches 186 miles in length. The Lake is fed by five rivers and is home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals and reptile species. For some water activities, you could try a boat tour with Canyon Adventure where you’ll see Glen Canyon Dam, Antelope Canyon, Navajo Canyon and Navajo sandstones.
A Texas girl at heart, I wasn’t too excited about eating BBQ in Arizona but this unassuming spot is absolutely scrumptious. Big John Texas BBQ features brisket and other slow-smoked eats so you definitely won’t leave hungry! Big John was born and raised in Dallas/ Ft. Worth, Texas where he learned all his secrets. And you can find live music here on the weekends so be sure to stop by when you’re in town!
Are you planning a trip to Page? What are you most excited to see? Let me know!
