5 Life-Saving Natural Remedies for a Teething Baby

Teething. The bane of my existence. There are few things worse than watching your little one suffer and not being able to take that pain away. Fortunately, thanks to friends, family, and google I have found the right mix of natural remedies and products that I now swear by! Oli now has 6 teeth (and counting!) and the discomfort is zero to none. Keep reading for the only 5 life-saving natural remedies you’ll need to offer maximum comfort as your babe starts growing his pearly whites.

Amber necklace

Oli always wears his amber necklace!

Amber releases succinic acid when in contact with skin and offers anti-inflammatory properties. The benefits go beyond teething but I’m happy to report that Oliver has had no drooling, fevers or any other symptoms from teething. Since I didn’t know when he was going to start teething I put on the necklace at 4 months and have never taken it off. He started teething at 7 months and still wears it and he hardly ever even notices it.

Food Feeder

Mesh food feeders were the most amazing discovery!

These were life savers! We always cut up fruit and keep it in the freezer – bananas, berries, apples – anything really – and place it inside the Munchkin Fresh Food Feeder and hand it over to baby at first sign of teething discomfort. I’ll put Oliver in high chair and let him go to town with it. It keeps him entertained, he loves the taste and the frozen fruit numbs his gums a bit. They make similar ones out of silicone and I found that both worked great – really it comes down to preference (the mesh ones usually remain stained from colored fruits but it never bothered us).

Teething Toys

Mostly something I buy for my pups, but given the need, Oliver got his set of chew toys too. Here are some of my (and Oliver’s) favorites – all bpa free! We keep them attached to him (and off the floor) with pacifier clips!

ZoLi Bunny Dual Nub Teether

B. LucKeys

These are great to distract baby from my own car keys

Baby Banana Infant Training Toothbrush and Teether

Sweet Tooth

Pop these in the freezer for extra coolness! Plus they smell great!

Distraction

Bath time is the best distraction!

If your little one is currently teething, you may notice that the worst moments are usually at night, mainly because baby doesn’t have much to focus on besides the pain. The first night Oliver was suffering through breaking teeth, after what felt like hours, I put him in the baby sling and went for a walk. The fresh air and visual distractions were great and eventually he fell asleep. Oliver also loves baths so I often give him a warm bath with Epsom salt and he sleeps like, well, a baby.

Essential Oil and Massage

I use doTERRA’s White Fir oil diluted with coconut oil and massage baby’s jawline as well as behind his ears to prevent ear infections. Oliver always seems to feel more relaxed after the massage. For more info on how to properly massage baby, read here.
